A New World

A New World by Amit Chaudhuri is a quietly extraordinary work of literary fiction from one of the most distinctive and celebrated prose stylists in contemporary Indian writing — a novelist compared to Proust for his ability to find profound significance in the texture of ordinary experience. Published by Picador, this novel demonstrates Chaudhuri's gift at its most concentrated.

The story follows Jayojit Chatterjee, an economics professor who has come from America to spend the summer in Calcutta with his elderly parents, bringing his young son. Recently divorced and in a state of quiet disruption, Jayojit inhabits the languid heat of the summer — the novel's subject being not so much what happens as the quality of experience itself: the conversations, the meals, the sounds, and the texture of days whose surface calm contains depths of feeling.

Chaudhuri writes with a stillness and precision requiring slow, attentive reading — valuing the quality of a sentence as highly as narrative momentum. For readers of serious literary fiction, A New World is an exceptional and deeply rewarding experience.
