Sleeping Arrangements

Sleeping Arrangements by Madeleine Wickham — better known to millions of devoted readers as Sophie Kinsella — is a sparkling and irresistibly funny holiday comedy from an author who has a unique gift for mining the rich comic potential of people placed in uncomfortable situations and expected to behave well. Published by Black Swan, this novel is a thoroughly enjoyable showcase of the storytelling talents that would later make the Shopaholic series a genuine global phenomenon.

The story begins when two separate families independently arrive at the same holiday villa in Spain, each absolutely convinced they have the right booking. What follows is the uncomfortable, hilarious, and increasingly complicated cohabitation of two families with very different personalities, very different family secrets, and — it gradually and delightfully emerges — a shared history that none of them were anticipating having to confront. The Spanish sun, the shared pool, and the long evenings ensure that the comedy escalates perfectly.

Wickham handles the ensemble cast and the escalating misunderstandings with exceptional comic timing and genuine warmth for all of her characters — there are no pure villains here, only deeply fallible and entirely recognisable human beings. Sleeping Arrangements is exactly the kind of book that readers describe as 'unputdownable' — light in the very best sense of the word, and enormously satisfying from first page to last.
